Exit-Intent Surveys
An exit-intent survey is triggered when the system detects that a user is about to leave the website—on both desktop and mobile. The system monitors signals indicating an intention to end the visit (exit intent) and displays a survey invitation just before the user exits the site.
When to Use:
When you want to understand why users are leaving the site without converting or completing a key action
To assess overall impressions of the visit and identify usability barriers
Benefits:
Reaches the user at a critical moment
Captures valuable feedback just before losing a potential customer
Can reveal issues not visible through analytics data
Tips:
Keep the survey short and direct (e.g., “What stopped you from completing your purchase?”)
Apply additional conditions—such as a minimum time on site—to reduce accidental triggers
Device-Specific Behavior:
On desktop, exit intent is typically detected by tracking cursor movement toward the top edge of the browser (e.g., toward the tab close button), though many more signals are used for accurate detection
On mobile, where there’s no cursor, exit intent is identified using alternative methods based on user behavior patterns—an approach that delivers strong results despite technical limitations
Survey Trigger Methods – Exit Intent
The YourCX platform offers several advanced mechanisms for detecting exit intent, tailored to different devices. Examples include:
- Mouse leave after inactivity – desktop
Triggers when the user's cursor exits the browser window after a period of inactivity. Highly accurate on desktop devices. - Time spent on site + exit attempt – desktop
Combines time on site with an exit signal to target more engaged users. - Attempt to close browser tab after inactivity – mobile
A method adapted to small screens and touch interaction; ideal for mobile exit detection. - Return to the site – desktop & mobile
Displays the survey when a user returns to the site after briefly leaving, such as switching tabs. Useful for asking about abandonment or interrupted sessions. - Exit-block alert with survey prompt
Shows a blocking message containing a survey when the user tries to close the page. Should be used with caution to avoid appearing intrusive.
Additional Settings
- Invitation frequency controls
You can set limits to avoid overexposing users to the same survey invitation—e.g., show only once every 7 days or suppress further invites for 28 days after a response. - Global blocking for exit-intent surveys
The system can automatically prevent other "exit intent" surveys from triggering after one has already been shown, helping avoid user fatigue.
